Rooted Light: Why Grounding Comes Before the Glow

As the days shorten, something in us wants to slow down. The desert evenings cool. The light leaves a little earlier. Nature is turning inward, and it's inviting us to do the same.

This season at deviSol, we're exploring a simple truth: you can't feel your light until you feel your ground.

Light Needs a Steady Base

Think of a candle. Its flame is bright only because it sits on something steady. Set it on shaky ground and it flickers, spills, goes out.

We're the same. When we're rushing and scattered, living in our heads and our to-do lists, our light is still there. We just can't feel it.

Here's why. When life feels like too much, the body shifts into protection mode. Breath gets shallow. Shoulders rise. The mind scans for what's next. This is the nervous system doing its job, keeping us safe. But in that state, there's little room for stillness, intuition, or joy.

Grounding gently tells the body it's safe to soften. Slow breath, steady feet, a hand on the heart. These simple acts help us shift toward rest, where the body can restore and the mind can quiet.

And in that quiet, we begin to notice what was there all along.

The Root Before the Radiance

In energy work, we often say: ground first, then open.

The root chakra, Muladhara, sits at the base of the spine. It's tied to the earth element and to our sense of safety, belonging, and trust. When the root is steady, energy can rise freely through the body, through the heart, toward the crown.

When the root is weak, we tend to float. We chase beautiful experiences but can't hold onto them. We feel inspired one day and drained the next. We look outside ourselves for light because we can't feel our own.

This is why every Reiki session and sound bath at deviSol begins by bringing you into your body. Not to keep you small, but to give your light a stable place to live.

A tree can only grow as tall as its roots are deep.

Roots Grow in the Dark

Before a seed reaches for the sun, it sends roots down into dark soil. That isn't a pause in its growth. That is its growth.

Here in the Sonoran Desert, winter is the quiet season. The heat breaks, the air softens, and beneath the surface, life is preparing. The desert doesn't rush spring. It trusts the timing.

November and December ask the same of us. Rest. Release. Let what's complete fall away. The longer nights aren't something to push through. They're an invitation to go inward.

Then comes the winter solstice on December 21, the longest night of the year. For thousands of years, people have marked this night with fire and gathering, not to mourn the dark, but to welcome the light's return. From that night forward, the days grow longer again.

The light always comes back. And so does yours.

Signs You May Need Grounding

Sometimes we don't realize we've drifted until we pause. You may need grounding if you notice:

  • Racing thoughts or trouble focusing

  • Feeling anxious, restless, or on edge

  • Trouble winding down at night

  • Giving to everyone but yourself

  • Feeling foggy, spacey, or disconnected from your body

  • Craving clarity but unable to find it

None of these mean something is wrong with you. They're simply signals. Your body is asking you to come home.

Simple Ways to Ground This Season

  • Earth contact. Stand barefoot on soil, grass, or sand for a few minutes. Feel the weight of your body held by the earth.

  • Longer exhales. Breathe in for 4 counts, out for 6. A longer exhale helps the body settle into calm.

  • Root visualization. Close your eyes and imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet deep into the earth. Let them hold you.

  • Low tones. Hum, chant, or listen to drums and singing bowls. Many people find low, steady sounds help them feel settled in the body.

  • Candle meditation. Light a candle at dusk and sit with it for five minutes. Let it remind you of the flame within.

  • Warm nourishment. Root vegetables, soups, and warm teas help the body feel held in the cooler months.

  • Hands on heart and belly. Breathe slowly into both. Feel yourself here, now.

Journal Prompts for the Season

Take a quiet moment with these. Write without editing.

  1. Where in my life do I feel most rooted? Where do I feel unsteady?

  2. What did this year ask me to release?

  3. What am I ready to set down before the new year?

  4. When do I feel my own light most clearly?

  5. What does my light want to create next?
